Imbolic; an ancient Celtic celebration.
Imbolic, is an ancient Celtic celebration. It’s known as the middle of the winter/spring season. Think of it as the holy day that marks the transition from Winter to Spring. Imbolic is actually a season and from my understanding, it's an old Irish word translating to 'in the belly' referring to pregnant ewes or to 'cleanse or wash' linked to a ritual of cleansing.
Traditionally, it's known as both fire and milk festival.
It's when the light (sun/fire) starts to return and the ewes milk (water) starts to coming in and "lets down" in preparation for lambing season. These two elements of fire and water are two of the basic building blocks and elements of creation and greatest potential for magic. These themes and two elements run through many cultures.
This is the season when hedgehogs and snakes start to emerge from their winter denning. Hence, Groundhog day in Canada and beyond. This is the season when my dad would have been able to go into the barns and have daylight fill the windows, even in the early evenings. When the sound of the crisp and crunchy snow would be heard underfoot, but a deep knowing that the calves are on their way.
Brigid - known as the bride of Scotland, is the sacred Goddess of this season. She's the fire Goddess and known for healing, poetry, fertility and motherhood. In Ireland, some weave crosses out of rushes or grains to be hidden in eaves and placed in windows to attract the blessings the Goddess holds.
So, today is the day when I invite you think about the intentions you may have set earlier in the year. Think about brining them into fruition as this is the season of transition from one thing to another. It is the season when the tulip bulbs start to awaken and know they will soon to send their energy in different directions. They will swell, grow, take deeper root, connect to their underground family and eventually shoot up in their bounty and beauty for the honey bees, our winged friends and creepy crawlies.
Everything in this life is also built off of death. Eventually, the tulips will shapeshift into the soil via their leaves and flowers. There, they share their nutrients, energy, minerals as decomposed matter for another to grow and eventually - share. Before their leaves go, they store their wisdom back within their bulbs for next year and share knowledge through their roots, informing others within their community. Sacred knowledge.
We are in transition, it’s the season to focus your energy on the small tasks that will lead to the bigger tasks that begin in spring.
Love you, mean it.
