Light Stream Exercise EMDR

If you’ve done EMDR with me, we’ve likely practiced some form of light stream exercise. This exercise is a great way to pause. Traditionally, light stream is used to reduce distress, ground, or help visualize painful material being released or soothed by a stream of light. This is especially helpful when we feel activation but aren’t yet ready to process things directly.

Here’s a Script

Begin by sitting comfortably, closing your eyes if it feels safe. Take a deep breath in… and slowly out. Repeat a few times.

Now, imagine a stream of healing light above your head. This light can be any colour that feels comforting or powerful to you, white, gold, blue, pink…whatever your system needs. Perhaps it's a mix of colour's.

This light begins to gently flow down from above, moving through your head, your face, your neck...slowly flowing into your shoulders and beyond.

As this light moves, allow it to gently wash away any tension, heaviness, or distress. If there's a place in your body holding discomfort or pain, guide the stream there.

Notice what happens as the light touches that place. Does it shift, dissolve, change colour or shape? Do the edges soften?

Let the stream continue all the way through your body, your chest, belly, hips, legs, feet, flowing down and out, carrying with it anything that’s ready to be released.

Take a moment to notice what your body feels like now. You can let the stream continue, or pause it if you need stillness. You are in control.

When you’re ready, take another deep breath. Gently come back to your space, knowing you can return to this light stream anytime you need support.

If you desire to get creative, voice record yourself reading the script and listen to your own version. The sound of your voice resonates at the perfect healing pitch for your individual cells.
